Avoiding Burnout
May 20, 2023Because the money is so good in real estate, people are willing to trade a lot for it. Agents lose track of priorities in their own life when they are chasing sales.
I’m here to tell you not to do this. It may be exciting to think about more paychecks but chasing them is not worth burnout.
I do encourage you to maintain ambitious real estate goals. However, do not lose track of priorities in your actual life. Real estate should never be your entire life. Making your real estate game your entire life is a path to burnout.
I have seen burnout make agents become weathered before their time. Some people might not like hearing me say this. It sounds savage. But it’s true. I’ve seen it happen around me. I’ve seen people age twenty years within five years. This happened because they didn’t have work-life balance. They never took a moment to disconnect from the job. They stayed connected to it 24/7. They carried the job with them every hour of every day for those five years. Balance in your life protects you from the stresses in this job. As a real estate agent, you are often connected to stressful events in the lives of your clients. Moving, divorces, and death are some of life’s most stressful events. All of your clients are dealing with at least one of these events. Moving. Many times they are dealing with one of the other stressful events too. Real estate transactions often happen when partners separate when people have to manage inheritance or legacy properties. As their agent, you are exposed to the stress energy attached to these transactions. You are not just managing real estate. You are often acting like an unofficial counselor as they navigate these big life changes and decisions. You are there for everything people unload onto you. You are absorbing all of this stress-energy.
You need to have systems in place to protect your energy and replenish your energy. If you do not, all of this exposure to stress can drain and weather you very quickly.
You need to balance out the highly demanding aspects of your real estate life. You must also build a separation between your personal and work life. Otherwise, you will overwork yourself and burn out before your time. It’s so important to create purpose somewhere else in your life, outside of real estate. At the end of the day, real estate is just your job. It’s not worth sucking out your life force and burning you out!
ACTION STEP: Time block your work day using the downloadable resource provided here. Plan personal time each day so that your days do not become consumed with your work. At least one day a week, block off a couple self-care hours for something like a massage. Make it a habit to block off time to recharge your energy.
