Consideration: Team Branding
May 10, 2023When you team up to door knock, it’s essential you consider Your Image and Team Branding.
Teaming up is a direct reflection of you and your business. When you are going to a door with someone, you need to make sure that person matches you and your brand. Their reputation becomes yours. Pairing with someone unlike you can hinder your game. Choose your knocking partner pairing, your clothing style, and what you say knowing this. When you are together at the door, all of this reflects on you.
I’ve witnessed and personally experienced good and bad agent pairing at the door. And it does affect how you get leads. I’ve watched the agents I’ve trained knock with different pairings. I’ve watched how clients react to them. What I’ve learned is that it’s better to pair agents with someone like themselves. I call this strategy “same same.” It has become a proven strategy in my game.
Let me explain what I mean by this.
I have learned from past pairing mistakes. Over the years, I have worked with agents who have cost me leads at the door. It was always when I paired with agents who had a different style at the door from mine. In one case, I approached doors with an agent whose conversation style was much more aggressive than mine. I had a different relationship-building style. She was more direct. We didn’t gain many leads because of our opposite style. It would be very unlikely for a client to be aligned to both my approach AND hers. It’s one or the other. Therefore, I’ve realized that a consistent team image and impression at the door is essential. This includes your personal style as well as your mannerisms.
Whenever I have success at the door, it is when I am knocking with someone like me. If the lead likes us, they like both of us. When there are two people with a style they like, it’s an advantage. They like you as a team.
You cannot control if the person wants to talk to you. However, you can control the odds. People make first impressions at the door…and that first impression can affect if they want to engage in conversation with you.
The fact is that everyone has different styles and personalities. You don’t want who you team with to be your opposite. You don't want the homeowner to have a different impression of you than of your teammate. You want your overall presence at the door to be the same. You want your image and the impression you leave to be generally consistent. That way, it isn’t confusing to the homeowner. They either want to work with you both or they don’t. They aren’t saying no to you because they liked you but not your teammate. Either way, it's a strong yes or a strong no. They like both of you, and are willing to get to know both of you. They are willing to trust both of you with their business. Or they aren’t.
Age pairing is also a consideration when teaming up. An older agent triggers associations with experience and a younger agent triggers associations with inexperience. When someone sees a younger agent standing next to an older agent, they automatically put the older agent in the same bucket as their partner. If the homeowner prefers a younger agent, you lose the lead because of the age difference. That homeowner may think the older agent standing next to a younger agent is dead weight on the team. In this case, homeowners may perceive younger agents as more up to date in the market. I have met many homeowners who have said they would never hire an agent over 50.
I am not saying these impressions are right. I am simply telling you that these perspectives exist. You are better off knocking with someone who is like you.
In this game, you want to stay in cont rol of as many factors as possible. Pairing with someone different from yourself takes this control out of your hands. This is not a time to mix things up.
And don’t worry. Clients exist for all agent styles. You will find your ‘people.’
I stick to the “same same” strategy. I close twice as many doors when I knock with someone who aligns with my own image and personality style. You should do the same.
