Map considerations:

  • The map’s layout
  • The map’s sections
  • How the map is used for door knocking
  • How to use colors and symbols to represent action and wins
  • What should be included on your map
  • Best maps to use

It's time to look at MY map!

How is my door knocking map set up? When we're looking at my map, our team had a larger overall area encompassing half of the city.

However, we didn't try to service the whole city. That would make zero sense!

Instead, we focused on our minutes and our dollars. How far can we get mileage out of them?

We had selected two regions within our city that we were working on. Our whole map represented a city within the different cities that make up Vancouver.

You have your regions, and you can even have zones within your regions. As I did, this may be a way for you to take on a more extensive area.

The zones currently being worked on were highlighted in blue for the first pass. The blue highlighter signifies that we had been to that house and primed them with the material. That means they have yet to be door knocked on, but they have received the pre-material. At that point, the team would then go out in pairs and start to door knock those areas. Once the team knocked on the homes, the street turned blue to pink.

The pink symbolizes that they have now been door knocked.

It would help if you always had sections of your map that are blue and sections that are pink. Areas in the priming phase and those in the door knocking phase. This way, your door knocking lead funnel will be balanced.

Add a date to each section for when you started the priming or knocking phase.

Our map was custom-made by a local designer, and it's hundreds of photos put together. The overall map symbolizes hundreds of different photos which have all been stitched together. When creating the map, it was important to me and have the house numbers underneath the houses on the street. This is optional; you can still knock on a street if you can see the homes but not the street addresses on your map. However, having their street addresses right there will make your follow-up game a lot easier.

Many people ask about diamonds, which are representations of solds.

You're probably wondering why there's no red. On our map, you only see green. This is because we chose to go with green as our sold colour. Because we resonated more with it, we thought it felt more like success and winning the level as it represented getting the paycheck = Green for cash. We personally don't like the colour red. And for that reason, we didn't include it on our board. When designing your map, you can choose the colours you resonate best with. You aim to have your map be a tool you enjoy working with, and it pleases you to look at it.

Visual CRMs are great because you can SEE your math. You can see

clusters and patterns very quickly.

You can see where you're winning and which areas turn over quickly. You can see in which areas you're getting the most results, where you're getting the most phone numbers or contact information.

If you have clusters on your map, you should focus more on that area. Knowing that it has the best return for you.

I get a lot of questions about my map and its size. And people ask if this is what they must start with when they start their door knocking game. The simple answer is no.

My first map was a simple eight by ten piece of paper that we literally would draw on. The first map was printed off of the iCloud map system. From there, we began to level up, and as we levelled up, we learned that city maps were the best to use.

The map is for more than just checking in before heading out. The map is for coming back and seeing what you did conquer.

Before we headed out, we looked at our map and where we were going. We would pack our boxes accordingly to how much material we needed for where we were going that day.

You should know how much material you need and where you are going ahead of time.

The game only begins when you head out. Once your get back to the office after door knocking,  the first thing to do is track. You want to see your results right in front of you.

What worked?

What didn't?

Did you conquer new ground that day?

Or how much did you conquer?

Example of review:

Training session with a new agent from the week of video filming:

"I'm currently training a new agent, and I took her out door knocking. We only went for 32 minutes. And in those 32 minutes, we were able to hit 38 doors. Two of those doors were CMAs. So that means that her conversion rate is quite high."

You can do the math there.

These visual representations of winning are really how the map is so handy. How do you think that agent felt that day when she got to come to the office and mark it on the map as having two wins out of 38 homes?

That created a momentum of winning energy!

If you are growing a team - (which you should once you master door knocking and train them to knock with you and for you), you can zone off areas for them. For example, mark one region of your farming area into zones.

Do this for several purposes. Number one, it is an area that can be accomplished, making it not overwhelming.

Number two, for preparation. You want to be prepared when you go and grow. You don't want yourself or anyone in the future to grab a box and go. What if you're on a great roll and you run out of material? By having zones and preparing appropriately, your box will be packed correctly.

You're always going to be set up for your day, but never caring more than you need to on your map.

On your map, it's helpful to include things such as the street address and also plot sizes. If you can get the land size on your map for each lot, that's going to help you to spot your patterns and your clusters.

On our map, we had clusters in certain areas, and that's because those areas had the most turnover.

You'll be able to see clusters of homes that are set on green belts that may be on the riverfront. You can see which lots are double lots or even triple lots. You can see different places that are getting rezoned on your map. If you choose a map from your city that has upcoming projects on it, you can identify even when being rezoned.

My two top recommendations when creating your map are to find something that you can reuse, whether it be a whiteboard or laminated. Secondly, I recommend you use city maps to create your map. The reason for this is that the city maps will be able to show you an immense amount of information about those individual lots. Overall, you're looking for the streets, and it's great to get all the information about each house on your map.

Action Step: From here, I want you to take your next action step. You're going to download the worksheet attached, and you're going to begin creating your map. Then, it is time for you to start tracking your door knocking.
