Practice Outside Your Area
May 17, 2023Let’s talk about how to work your plan.
I teach farming as a long-term game. That means the strategy is to plant seeds and gradually farm your area, nurturing your leads over time. There are a number of strategies that can ensure the health of your long game.
First, I always teach agents to Practice Outside Your Farming Area
You want to practice outside of your target area. Your practice area is part of your micro-exposure strategy. It helps you get used to the job, such as facing rejection at the door. In your practice area, you get many of the growing pains out of the way. When you get to your chosen target area, you’re ready to win.
If you plan on being an agent long term, you want to protect your reputation. If you mess up, that can be a big hurdle to overcome. It’s better to start in another area and build up your door knocking skills. As a new agent, you may or may not be very good when you start. But you won’t know until you start. Who knows what could go wrong or feel strange at the door? You don't know what you might do in front of people. There are so many scenarios and situations that can happen.
Use your practice area to get used to everything. Even just the feel of walking up to homes takes practice. So does tracking your leads with notes afterward. You also need to get used to your own body language at the door. Even setting your mindset as you drive to the area takes practice. The first couple times you go, you may be driving and thinking, “Oh, my God, what if X happens?” Train this out of your mind with new habits such as listening to an audiobook or calming music. With practice, you’ll start to feel more comfortable with the whole process.
You want to get comfortable with everything about door knocking before you officially start in your target area. Practicing in another area also takes the pressure off while you hone your skills.
I learned this lesson through training my team. When they went into an area before they were ready, it hindered their game.
ACTION STEP. Expand upon the area you started priming earlier and start practicing your knocking skills there. After this video, print of a map of areas in your city you could practice and at least one more practice area. Then, follow the step-by-step practice guide I included for download.
And a Pro Tip! If you want to quickly level up, find a mentor to shadow in a non-competing area. Have them take you with them and watch them in action while door knocking.
