Safety & Real Estate Door Knocking
May 21, 2023Every agent needs to keep Safety top of mind and prepare safety practices. This applies to men too, even if they feel more secure than women. Men and women should both always be careful. Most community or doorway interactions are seamless and 100% normal. However, every once in a while, you may run into an uncomfortable situation in a community or at a door.
I’m not suggesting you should be afraid. I’m just saying be aware. Prevention is the best way to stay safe while door knocking.
Here is how to stay safe while door knocking. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
First and foremost, be aware of your surroundings. Is there anyone around you? Don't become complacent, no matter how nice or safe the area seems or what the time of day is. Don’t get distracted by your phone while walking. Always stay focused on what’s around you. Trust Your Gut
Have faith in your instincts. Listen to your gut when it tells you something isn’t right. Your gut feeling is a form of self-preservation. It's your subconscious warning you. Many crime victims admit that they sensed something was wrong but ignored it. Don’t do that. If something tells you not to knock on a door, don't knock. If something tells you to leave an area, leave. Always listen to your gut.
Get trained in Self Defense or carry a protective device
Self-defense training is never a bad idea for any area of your life. Research and take time to learn whatever self-defense tools you think best suits you.
Devices are also good. Having self-protection devices on hand can help you escape a dangerous situation. They include such things as high pitch audible devices (for example - loud personal alarms). They’re simple, effective, and don’t require any training. Research device options that you think would work for you as an agent in your area. Make sure to double-check that your device is also compliant with local laws.
Here are a few other Safety Tips and Resource
Do the following each time you go out prospecting:
- Share your location on your phone with a trusted friend.
- Avoid the dark. Once the sun goes down, cease knocking for the day.
- Avoid homes where you need to walk out of sight from the road, such as houses fenced by large
Bushes.
- Avoid super long driveways that wind out of sight from the main street.
- Never go into a home alone. Book a time to come back.
